God of War: The Continuation We Never Dreamed Of

It’s been 5 years since we last saw Kratos, the God of War, on any console titles. If we thought that God of War 3 would be the open ended finish that would leave his fate up to our imaginations, we were proven wrong. When it was revealed at the 1st annual Playstation Experience Expo in 2014 that a new God of War was in development by Santa Monica Studios director Cory Barlog, I’ll admit I was in a bit of disbelief and had a “I’ll believe it when I see it” mentality. And then at E3 2017, a trailer featuring new gameplay was shown...and then I truly believed. As a direct sequel to 2010’s God of War 3, it has been a seamless transition between the stories. Outside of the common questions, such as “how did Kratos get to Norway” and “How long has it been since the end of God of War 3” and what not, the game has been nothing but excellent.
Not spoiling too much for those who don’t have the game yet (which I would slightly understand why you don’t by now), you start off with Kratos and his son, Atreus, bringing a chopped tree to their home in the woods setting up a burial fire pit for Atreus’ mother who passed away. As Kratos sets fire to his lost love, he and Atreus go around the woods surrounding their home, collecting materials for their daily lives. As the game moves along, you are introduced to the new gameplay mechanics ofcourse, along with a mini boss battle that introduces you to how most mini boss battles in the game will function. After the battle, Kratos and Atreus return to their home to rest, but are interrupted by an unexpected visitor. After quite a battle with this character that will be known as the stranger for now, Kratos realizes that the journey to fulfill his passed love’s request has to begin sooner than he desired.
For myself personally, the game feels like catching up with an old friend. My many years of playing the franchise kicked in as I battled the first major boss called “The Stranger”. Since our last conversation of him telling me what began his true descent into seeking redemption, I always wondered what happened to my hack and slash buddy who helped me channel my inner rage and channel it through him to aid in his battles against many enemies. When we reconnected, my friend seems calmer, more mature and responsible. I can see it in his eyes that he has coped with his anger along with walking away from his past. Seeing that he also has a child after knowing what happened with his previous family tell me he truly sought a new fresh start. I am happy for him. I also seek to aid him in this journey where his true goal is to “finish what his late wife asked and then return home to his peace and sanctuary with his son”. Being a little bit busier these days, I’ll help when I can. I’ll always make time for an old friend, but when I make that time I want no other distractions. God of War is a PS4 exclusive, release in 2018, developed Santa Monica Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
